It is now 2.6% higher than in 2007. Furthermore, prosperity growth has been faster from 2012 to 2017 than it was from 2007 to 2012. However, the gap between the highest and lowest scores in the Index has increased for five straight years and the spread between nations is growing, indicating that while prosperity as a whole may be increasing, not all countries are yet benefiting from the increase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"col-md-7 col-md-offset-4 selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"content selectionShareable\">\n<p data-redactor-inserted-image=\"true\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8715\/1169\/5572\/Asset_2.png\" media=\"(min-width: 900px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8715\/1169\/5572\/Asset_2.png\" media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8715\/1169\/5572\/Asset_2.png\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image-marker\" src=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8715\/1169\/5572\/Asset_2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p><strong>Asia-Pacific makes the greatest gains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While prosperity improved around the world in 2017, no region grew as fast as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/asia-pacific-a-wide-spread\">Asia-Pacific<\/a>. Gains came through a fast-improving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/business-environment-most-improved-globally\">Business Environment<\/a>, especially in the population centres of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/globe\/india\">India<\/a>\u00a0(\u06f1\u06f0\u06f0th),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/globe\/china\">China<\/a>\u00a0(\u06f9\u06f0th),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/globe\/pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a>(137th) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/globe\/indonesia\">Indonesia<\/a>\u00a0(\u06f5\u06f9th). It is now easier to access credit, and intellectual property rights have improved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"col-md-7 col-md-offset-4 selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"content selectionShareable\">\n<p data-redactor-inserted-image=\"true\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2915\/1169\/5574\/Asset_3.png\" media=\"(min-width: 900px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2915\/1169\/5574\/Asset_3.png\" media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2915\/1169\/5574\/Asset_3.png\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image-marker\" src=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2915\/1169\/5574\/Asset_3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p><strong>Improved government accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every region in the world improved in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/governance-highest-in-11-years\">Governance<\/a>\u00a0in 2017, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/asia-pacific-a-wide-spread\">Asia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/sub-saharan-africa-growth-from-low-base\">Sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>\u00a0rising fastest. Across the world judiciaries became more independent from state interference and the process of challenging governmental regulation became easier. People also became more confident in the outcome of elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"col-md-7 col-md-offset-4 selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"content selectionShareable\">\n<p data-redactor-inserted-image=\"true\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8515\/1169\/5570\/Asset_4.png\" media=\"(min-width: 900px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8515\/1169\/5570\/Asset_4.png\" media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8515\/1169\/5570\/Asset_4.png\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image-marker\" src=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8515\/1169\/5570\/Asset_4.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p><strong>Western Europe overtakes North America<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in the Index,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/western-europe-leading-way-american-prosperity-declines\">Western European<\/a>\u00a0prosperity is higher than in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/north-america-falls-in-latest-rankings\">North America<\/a>, albeit marginally. Western European prosperity remained broadly constant; but North America fell faster than any other region, due to an increase in the number of homicides and greater societal pressure on citizens\u2019 freedom of religion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"col-md-7 col-md-offset-4 selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"content selectionShareable\">\n<p data-redactor-inserted-image=\"true\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8415\/1169\/5576\/Asset_5.png\" media=\"(min-width: 900px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8415\/1169\/5576\/Asset_5.png\" media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8415\/1169\/5576\/Asset_5.png\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image-marker\" src=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/8415\/1169\/5576\/Asset_5.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p><strong>Notable fallers in Latin America and the Caribbean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While overall prosperity increased, the region also contains some notable fallers. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/globe\/el-salvador\">El Salvador<\/a>\u00a0(\u06f9\u06f1st) now has the highest homicide rate in the world. In 2017, it suffered a fall in eight of nine Index pillars, with rapidly worsening\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/safety-and-security-2017s-biggest-loser\">Security<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/social-capital-big-improvements\">Social Capital<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/business-environment-most-improved-globally\">Business Environment<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/governance-highest-in-11-years\">Governance<\/a>\u00a0all now cancelling out their gains from the last five years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"col-md-7 col-md-offset-4 selectionShareable\">\n<div class=\"content selectionShareable\">\n<p data-redactor-inserted-image=\"true\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/3915\/1169\/5577\/Asset_6.png\" media=\"(min-width: 900px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/3915\/1169\/5577\/Asset_6.png\" media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/3915\/1169\/5577\/Asset_6.png\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image-marker\" src=\"https:\/\/prosperitysite.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/3915\/1169\/5577\/Asset_6.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p><strong>Decreasing Safety and Security in the MENA region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite gains in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/social-capital-big-improvements\">Social Capital<\/a>\u00a0and a strengthening\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/business-environment-most-improved-globally\">Business Environment<\/a>, overall prosperity in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/middle-east-and-north-africa-decline\">Middle East and North Africa (MENA)<\/a>\u00a0has suffered in recent years through worsening\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/feed\/safety-and-security-2017s-biggest-loser\">Safety and Security<\/a>.
